The use and utility of shipping containers in construction and business

Thanks to their simple construction and minimalist design, containers are a great base that we can freely modify for all kinds of projects. In addition to transportation, the container market in Poland is very popular in terms of construction. What else can we use them for?

The construction of a traditional single-family house consumes a huge amount of money, and according to the CSO, it takes an average of about 3.5 years to “put up” such a turnkey building. Of course, these are only statistics, and they will not apply to every case, in any case, the construction of a house, but also other functional buildings in the traditional way, is usually an expensive, complicated and time-consuming process.

Against the backdrop of cost and distant construction deadlines comes container construction, which is gaining increasing recognition in Poland. A dozen years ago, it would hardly have occurred to anyone to furnish a house or restaurant out of containers. Today, it is a very clever alternative to traditional construction, and thus a better chance to realize your own business idea.

A school, a swimming pool, a town made of containers? Why not?

The variety of applications, ease of transportation, and many ways to connect containers together allow us to create a variety of usable areas.
In the process of adapting a shipping container for an apartment building, restaurant, or office, we have a huge range of possibilities in the form of modifications. From insulation, installation of air conditioning insertion of windows, electrical, heating and plumbing installations, which practically do not differ from those in traditional construction, to the installation of, for example, photovoltaic panels.

Thanks to this, there is nothing to prevent the containers from being used to create, for example… a school. One such school of 250 square meters is located in Dabrowa near Poznan. Inside – 3 classrooms, a common room, a library, toilets, including for the disabled, and a teachers’ room. Is it possible? One can.

The aforementioned long construction time applies not only to traditional commercial buildings, but also, let’s say, garden pools. The expectations of impatient people have been met by the Canadian company Modpools, which has patented a pool created from a shipping container, equipped with a ready-made sanitary and heating system, and we can use it the same day it is brought in. The price? From $16,000.

A city made of containers?

How about creating a whole town instead of individual items from containers? A couple from Gdansk came up with such an idea. “100cznia“, as their project is called, is one of the most popular places in Neptune’s City. The 100cznia owes its unusual arrangement and atmosphere to shipping containers, which serve the best in a cultural, entertainment and catering way. The township has been operating since 2017 during the summer season, and once we’re there, we can go to various dining establishments, a tattoo studio, a market, an exhibition, a carpentry workshop – all in shipping containers, of course.

Containers are not just transportation. It’s also a multitude of possibilities, installations, modifications and ideas. We can use them to create a home, an office, a restaurant, a cafe or even a swimming pool. And while not everyone may like the aesthetics of a shipping container due to its peculiar, minimalist appearance, it is certainly one
of a kind and eye-catching. However, let’s remember that it’s not what’s on the outside that counts, but what’s on the inside.
